Byron McKeeby was head of the printmaking department at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, from 1965 until his sudden death on November 3rd, 1984. McKeeby strove for an art of universal meaning. As Byron himself stated in an interview for the April, 1970 issue of the Coe College Courier: "Great art concerns itself not with ART, but with awakening he human consciousness to itself."
Viewers of McKeeby's prints are at once captivated by his world of satire, humor, and nature. For McKeeby, an important element in the making of art was a sense of discovery. Through appreciation of his technical virtuosity, the viewer is motivated to share in this sense of discovery, and is thereby elevated to a greater understanding of the artist's vision.
This series, consisting of 50+ prints, is available as a travelling exhibition. Please contact Sam Yates at the Ewing Gallery for more information.
